The Story

The Polar Bear Club phenomenon: Most people like to be perceived as cool. But members of Polar Bear Clubs around the world take this notion to the extreme. If you're not familiar with the phenomenon, Polar Bear Clubs gather with one purpose... to jump into freezing-cold winter-chilled water wearing just a swimsuit! The collective motto of these oddball Northern gatherings: "When you start your day at 0 degrees, there's no place to go but up."

The Florida version

Florida residents have never had a chance to participate in such an experience... until now. Sunny Orlando is the first bona-fide Southern destination to form a branch of the famed Polar Bear Club. Since 2008, participants have "taken the plunge" in another way... during a visit to 9-degree ICE! attraction at Gaylord Palms Resort. Orlando Polar Bear Club members walked through ICE! in a swimsuit and took a "plunge" down the ICE! slides!

On Saturday, December 3, ICE! will open the doors at 7:30a.m. to welcome guests to become official members of the Orlando Polar Bear Club. Afterwards, participants will be recognized at a "warm-up" coffee and cocoa reception, during an official induction into the club.

The special Orlando Polar Bear Club ticket is $19.99 plus tax, and includes the "after-glow" warm-up reception and a commemorative certificate, plus a chance to go through ICE! again later that morning, fully clothed, to better enjoy the artistry at a slower (and warmer) pace.

Throughout the United States, many Polar Bear Clubs raise money for local charities. In that tradition, proceeds from every full-price ticket sold will go to charity.

What to wear: Um, a swimsuit! What else? To get the full Orlando Polar Bear Club experience, you'll want to walk through the ICE! attraction in your swimsuits. But, your suit must be in good taste — no thongs, please. (As an alternate to a swimsuit, you are welcome to wear summer clothing, such as shorts and a t-shirt... but, for the full chill, we encourage swimwear!)

Be sure to wear your swimsuits under your clothing. Restrooms are available in close proximity to ICE! for changing, however, additional changing areas will not be available. All guests are required to wear shoes inside ICE! Guests will not be permitted to enter without shoes.

Safety: This is not a contest, and you should expect to spend only a few minutes inside ICE! After all, it's nine degrees in there, and you're not a real polar bear! To ensure that you have an opportunity to enjoy the true artistic beauty of ICE!, your Orlando Polar Bear Club ticket will allow you to revisit the attraction again on the morning of December 3, 2011. This time fully clothed!

Freeze the moment: Don't leave home without a camera! You'll want to freeze this moment for sure!

Additional activities: All guests are welcome to enjoy all the activities and events that are part of our Christmas at Gaylord Palms celebration. For more information and a schedule of entertainment, visit www.ChristmasAtGaylordPalms.com

Wave to your friends at home: It is possible that there will be media present to cover the event, so smile for the cameras!  You could even end up on Facebook!
